Bonnet de Police

et Chapeau

Return to the 3eme Cuirassiers home page

One of the traditions of western armies for several centuries is that military personnel keep their heads covered on and off duty.  Our regiment has several items for this purpose.  The bonnet de police, or fatigue cap, is worn as part of the petit tenue, for every-day and casual wear.
The bonnet de police is custom made in Great Britain of Imperial blue wool piped red, and with a 3/4 inch white stripe and white tassle slipped through a white cord loop at the end of the flap.  The flap and tassle are draped loosely to the left when off duty, while on duty the tassle tucked in and suspended at the front over the grenade applique.

The chapeau of the period evolved from the tricorne and bicorne of the 18th Century.  Our chapeau is worn as part of the walking out dress, the Tenue Habituelle, such as when journeying into town from the barracks.  It is stiff wool with a Tricolor button and lace (rosette / cockade).  On campaign it can be folded flat and placed inside the portmanteau.
