3eme Cuirassiers

Casque

Return to the 3eme Cuirassiers home page

For our impressions we use a mix of early model and 1811 casques.  Both have a metal-edged peak and embossed brass crest.  During this period, casques were ordered from numerous vendors by individual regiments.  The Model 1811 was designed by the War Ministry simpler and more economical manufacture.  Both casques followed a common basic design, but had considerable variance even within regiments.

On close inspection of a group of cuirassiers, there will be some variance in the appearance of the casques.  This exemplifies the historical differences among the products of various suppliers, and also the mix of 1811 model and pre-1805 casques among the cuirassiers.  New recruits will be using the Model 1811 casque to ensure this variance in appearance is maintained.  Photos to the right of a Model 1811 casque embossed for the 5eme Cuirassiers, are courtesy of Paul Flemming.

Both casques have a removable red plume - worn on parade and more formal occasions with the Grande Tenue, and removed for drill and campaign activities.  For campaign activities á cheval the plume is placed horizontal within the portmanteau, often within a cylindrical leather sleeve.

Among the number of skilled craftsmen in Europe and North America capable of maufacturing a reproduction casque suitable for our purposes.  Email Nick Serafino for additional information about ordering the casque.
