We use a historically accurate reproduction cuirassiers bit.  This is a medium port curb bit sized to fit today's horse.   This bit is constructed from steel with swivel rings and a tie chain at the shank ends.  A round brass plaque bearing the regimental number is riveted to each side of the bit at the bar.

A heavy flat curb chain and two curb hooks must be provided by the rider.  These are available from any tack supplier.

Curb bits traditionally are used when the rider needs control with only one hand on the reins, and especially when he wants instant response or brakes, or when the rider wants vertical flexion from a highly trained horse. Since these bits exert considerable force through leverage, these have the potential to impart pain - these must be used gently and with a well trained horse and rider team.
